How the technological Specialisation of Scaleups is Shaping the Entrepreneurial Ecosystems of the European Cities

While the concept of ecosystem for entrepreneurs and startups dominates the discourse on promoting innovation, the geography of cities with startups has remained a largely uncharted territory. To fill this gap, we retrieved from Dealroom.co 12,500 scaleups (startups raised more than 1 million euros in funding) headquartered in Europe and matched them to EU-OECD functional urban areas classification. The cluster analysis reveals a strong West-East and North-South divide in Europe and the dominant role of a handful of scaleup cities. However, looking at the specialisation of scaleup cities in Industry 4.0 technologies, the territorial pattern shows some sign of convergence.
